KALACHA CULTURAL FOOD AND MUSIC FESTIVAL 2018

 “Sustaining our cultural values for Prosperity”
Kivulini Trust in partnership with Waso Trusland Project and ISID is delighted to announce the 7th edition of Annual Kalacha Cultural Food and Music Festival to be held in Kalacha Marsabit County; Northern Kenya between the 14th and 17th December 2018.

The Four-day event will bring together pastoralists, fisher folk, hunter gatherer, metal artisans, agricultural community, local schools and our partners from Arbore community among others from as far as Southern Ethiopia, to reconnect, share and celebrate their cultural and natural heritage to promote biocultural diversity, social harmony for sustainable development. The event further offers the participants a platform to showcase their diverse cultural heritage, interact and learn from each other’s experiences and aspirations.

Participating Kenyan communities includes the Boran, Burji, Daasanach, El-Molo, Gabbra, Garri, Konso, Meru, Rendille, Samburu, Sakuye, Sidama, Somali, Turkana and Waayu communities all dwelling in extensive geographical region of Northern Kenya, that includes Isiolo and Marsabit Counties.

Kalacha where the event is held is located approximately 700km north of Nairobi City in North Horr Constituency of Marsabit County. The town stands at the south-eastern corner of Chalbi desert on a permanent oasis surrounded by scenic doum palm trees and acacia woodland. Kalacha Cultural center, the venue for the festival is situated about 3 KMs to the north-west of Kalacha town along the Kalacha-North Horr road.

The festival enjoys significant support from Marsabit and Isiolo county governments and other development actors both national and international.

Kindly note that, participants are expected to meet their travel, food and accommodation costs apart from the invited community groups.

Kalacha Food and Music Festival 2017

Theme: “Celebrating milestones in Cultural renaissance and Partnership”

Kivulini Trust is delighted to announce the 6th Annual Kalacha Cultural Food and Music Festival to be held in Kalacha Marsabit County; Northern Kenya between the 15th and 18th December 2017.

The event targets our partner community groups from the Boran, Burji, Daasanach, El-Molo, Gabbra, Garri, Konso, Meru, Rendille, Samburu, Sakuye, Sidama, Turkana and Waayu communities of Marsabit and Isiolo Counties.
This two-day event will bring together community groups, local schools and partners from as far as Southern Ethiopia. The participating partners have worked together overtime to preserve culture and natural heritage for sustainable progress. The event further offers the participants a platform to showcase their diverse cultural heritage, interact, share and learn from each others’ experiences and aspirations; geared towards building a cohesive and progressive society that cherish and celebrate its culture and natural heritage.

Kivulini Trust is organizing the second Kalacha Cultural Food and Music Festival to be held in Kalacha, Marsabit County, Northern Kenya between the 23rd and 26th August 2013.

The event will bring together pastoralists, fisher folk, hunter gatherer, metal artisans and agricultural communities of Northern Kenya to share and celebrate their cultural and natural heritage in order to promote cultural diversity, social harmony and sustainable development.

This festival will showcase the diversity of the region’s rich cultural and natural heritage through artistic expressions, exhibitions of traditional foods, medicinal plants and demonstration of traditional technology. Participating communities include the El-Molo, Gabbra, Rendille, Boran, Somali, Konso, Garri, Burji, Waata, Samburu, Saakuye Turkana and the Daasanach.

The host town, Kalacha, is an Oasis settlement located on the south-eastern corner of Chalbi Desert about 700 km from Nairobi by road (see the route map). The festival site is situated in the midst of scenic acacia woodland situated about three kilometers to the north-west of Kalacha town along the Kalacha-North Horr road.

We envisage that the festival will make positive contributions to the promotion of community empowerment, social harmony, national integration and social-economic development in the region.

Kivulini Trust is pleased to announce the fifth annual Kalacha Cultural Food and Music Festival to be held in Kalacha, Marsabit County in Northern Kenya, between 5th to 8th August 2016.

This four day event will showcase the diversity of the region’s social cultural and natural heritage through artistic expressions, traditional foods, and medicinal plants, performances of songs and dances and demonstration of traditional technology.  The event is also a space for communities of Northern Kenya to interact, exchange knowledge, share experience and aspirations.  

Participating communities include the Boran, Burji, Daasanach El-Molo Gabbra, Garri, Konso Rendille Samburu Saakuye, Sidama Somali,Turkana and  Waayu of Marsabit and Isiolo Counties of Northern Kenya.

In addition, the celebration is expected to attract local and international visitors from all walks of life including scientists, leaders, musicians, tourists, and representatives of civil societies from Kenya and abroad.
