Kalacha Cultural Festival 2014

Kivulini Trust is pleased to announce thethird Annual Cultural Food and Music Festival to be held in Kalacha, Marsabit County in Northern Kenya from the 5th to the 9thof December 2014. The theme of the festival is  “Heritage for social cohesion and prosperity”

This five-day event will showcase the diversity of the region’s social cultural and natural heritagethrough artistic expressions, medicinal plants, exhibitions of traditional foods,songs and dances and demonstration of traditional technology. Participating communities include the, Samburu, Gabbra, Daasanach, Rendille, Boran, Somali, Turkana, Konso, El-Molo, Garri, Burji, Saakuye and the Waata.

This festival brings together pastoralists, fisher folk, metal artisans, hunter gatherer and agricultural communities of the region to share and celebrate their cultural and natural heritage in order to promote cultural diversity, social harmony and sustainable development

Located about 700km north of the city of Nairobi, the town of Kalacha stands at the south-eastern corner of Chalbi desert on a permanent oasis surrounded by scenic doum palm and acacia woodland. Kalacha Cultural Center, the venue for the festival, is situated about three kilometers to the north-west of Kalacha town along the Kalacha-North Horr road.
